Gray Puksand was commissioned to design a new addition to a prominent heritage building in Melbourne.
The building is an example of early 20th-century showroom and workshop architecture.
And it has significant heritage value.
So setbacks for the new commercial tower from the original façade were carefully considered and sympathetically resolved by the Gray Puksand design team.
An appropriate podium was established by the existing façade which creates a visual separation from the new work.
The intent of the tower is to present as recessive, with the existing heritage building remaining visually dominant.
Muted tones were used throughout the tower so as not to overwhelm the light tones of the heritage façade.
The curved corners of the office building soften the visual impact of the new form that sits above the existing heritage building and is sympathetic to the corner of Elizabeth and Queensberry Streets below.
Rebated horizontal bands articulate the façade reducing the bulk and referencing the horizontal form of the heritage building below.
