Starting as a solid 1970s shell, this townhouse has been transformed by Lisa Breeze Architect into a chic, cosy and highly functional abode for a couple and their fur babes.
Overall the spaces have retained their original locations, but the existing kitchen layout was clunky with plenty of wasted space which is so critical to take advantage of in inner-city homes.
It was imperative to respect the subtle ’70s vibe that had managed to survive a bad fit out for the property’s sale.
Cues were taken from the salvaged building elements such as the painted bricks, retro timber panelling, bold exposed floor joists overhead and the chunky open staircase.
The aim was to keep them, celebrate them and build on them – by borrowing details inspired by the simplicity, robustness, and subtle patterning of these features.
The finishes for this project are simple but refined, with injections of bold colours and patterns wherever possible.
The humble original building elements of multi-res construction from time past are an ideal backdrop for being adventurous with the new work.
The main living space seamlessly integrates the kitchen, laundry, and garden shed into the one area.
Peering beyond all this is the tiny garden which is packed with life, with the ever changing hues of the Japanese maple, and the soft pastels of a varied collection of succulents.
The space was treated primarily as an outdoor room to gaze on, and as an extension of the living space, to be enjoyed whenever the Melbourne weather allows.
