The Breakfast Room is an extension to a narrow two-bedroom Edwardian residence located in the heart of Windsor, Melbourne.
Designed by Melanie Beynon Architecture and Design, the client brief sought to make use of the overshadowed courtyard to the rear of Windsor House.
So the design team set out to create an enclosed space that maximised natural light.
The 15 square metre space functions as a dining area with a laundry concealed inside the custom joinery.
Given the new architecture sits on the title boundary of the property, slivers of the green landscape are framed by the full-height windows and doors.
Dynamic moods of changing weather conditions by day and the inner-city glow by night are captured within the newly created space.
A soft palette of finishes was specified for the room and refined detailing was deployed.
Key textures included a polished concrete floor and hand-applied render.
The planting is a collection the owner has cultivated over many years.
This brought a connection from past homes and successfully connected the interior with the exterior.
This sanctuary of calm has fulfilled the owner’s desire to relax and entertain with family and friends on a compact footprint.
This project reminds us of the outsized value that modestly proportioned and well-designed spaces can deliver.
