Cairns Hockey has been playing the game for 90 years.
With 118 teams from Under 10 to Masters – male and female during the winter season, 60 plus teams playing Indoor, Social, and Walking Hockey – there are participation opportunities for everyone.
Its facilities are located in North Cairns, just 2kms from the airport and 4kms from the CBD.
Following a consultation-led master planning process, TPG Architects was commissioned to design a new Clubhouse and Member Amenities.
The TPG design team identified that a centrally located bifurcated grandstand was the linchpin.
Linking the Reef and Rainforest hockey pitches, this facility was envisioned as a multi-purpose hub for spectator seating, outdoor gathering, clubhouse, bar, and kiosk.
Flanked by a new amenities building and ‘front door’, the grandstand moves the focus from the boundary to the heart of the site.
The butterfly roof expresses the hinging nature of the building – a pivot for site circulation opening up to both hockey pitches.
Raising the grandstand one storey off the ground plane allowed circulation to pass under the building whilst the upper level is connected to the ground via a terraced lawn known as ‘The Hill’.
This raised lawn combines with the grandstand platform to form a generous outdoor room – a central piazza, BBQ, carnival marketplace, pre-training ‘pep talk’ zone, or simply a great spot to watch either pitch.
