Emu Park SLSC Boatshed

Emu Park SLSC Boatshed

Located on the edge of the beach, the design of the upgraded Emu Park Life Saving Club Boatshed and Amenities had to contend with harsh seaside conditions.

Central Queensland based architects Design + Architecture included a range of clever building techniques within their design to minimize ongoing maintenance and day-to-day costs.

Emu Park Surf Lifesaving Club originally comprised two buildings – a general clubhouse and a boat shed.

The original amenities within the clubhouse building were obsolete.

The design utilised the existing amenities footprint for new retrofitted facilities including a universal accessible toilet and male amenities.

A new female amenities block was added.

The original boatshed had a damaged and leaking concrete roof and was unfit for purpose.

The new boatshed, smaller in footprint, has higher ceilings, multiple access points, and permanent natural ventilation.

A simplified footprint delivers improved useability within the boatshed whilst providing more efficient storage.

Design + Architecture worked closely with the Club to create a sleek modern Boatshed.

Minimising ongoing building maintenance was a priority for the Club.

So low-maintenance materials were used throughout including concrete blockwork, timber, and aluminium sheeting.

Extensive design decisions were made to avoid any materials that would rust or have a high maintenance load like steel or glass.

The building layout and shape allows for natural ventilation and light with the fixed louvres with fly screens allowing the building to breathe.

To increase usability and flexibility, the Boatshed features several roller doors on three sides.

The roller doors provide flexible access to the boat shed and separate the board users (mainly nippers) from the vehicle, trailer, and boat movements.

These doors also increase airflow and natural light, even in a closed position thanks to perforated roller doors.

A light well was placed in the centre of the roof in order to increase airflow and natural light.

The building now features a breezeway which acts as a new entrance to the existing building, as well as a separation between the boasted and clubhouse.

The breezeway and new club signage, including the unique Surf Life Saving Logo featured on the building, has created a prominent street facade.
