Kismet Park is a primary school with a curriculum focus on the Performing Arts. It is situated in a housing estate near the historic Kismet House at Sunbury, which is about 37 kilometres from Melbourne.
The existing building stock, whilst generally in good condition, was poorly planned with excess circulation space and did not meet the school’s contemporary needs.
Bryant Alsop Architects’ design delivered a re-landscaped front gate and walkway to create a more direct, comprehensible path to the upgraded Administration.
Working within the structural framework of the existing building, the refurbished Administration creates a more secure, accessible space for staff, students, and visitors.
A key insertion to the existing built fabric, the Performing Arts and Music building is a distorted, rectilinear plan with a strong, dynamic roof creating a flexible space filled with south light.
The raked acoustic ceiling created a responsive environment for active and passive performances and a vibrant orange window seat provided a private recess for small group interactions.
The angular form accentuates the linear plan; a gesture that reinforced Bryant Alsop’s belief that simple projects don’t need to be static.
The direct connection to the existing stage enabled the space to be used as a green room during performances, which are an important centrepiece of the school’s cultural year.
The success of this modest project, designed by Bryant Alsop, is demonstrated everyday via the robust engagement it has with the broader school community.
