Lavender Bay Apartment

This apartment has a dramatic backdrop of Sydney harbour and its daily movements.

However, it was a series of dim airless spaces, angled walls, and complicated ceilings .

So Still Space Architecture was briefed to open up the apartment to views and the breeze, improve the function of spaces, and make better use of the outdoor terrace.

The new design orients the spaces to stretch along the width of the apartment , creating more horizontal proportioned spaces that draw your eye to the horizon line.

Joinery is used to add texture to the spaces and strengthen the horizontal proportions of the rooms.

The kitchen was re-positioned to run the length of the space functioning as both a informal dining table and kitchen area.

Deep blue cabinetry is set within the kitchen and holds a mosaic lined bar, fridge and pantry.

The ultramarine blue colour was inspired by Brett Whitely’s Lavender Bay series of paintings.

The sleeping and bathing area is a moody contrast and again has been reconfigured to improve cross flow ventilation and functionality.

The ensuite was rejigged to allow for entry from the bedroom, this entry threshold is concealed within a wall of bespoke cabinetry.

The bathroom is lined in dark tiles with a sliding panels enclosing a turquoise shower space.

The project was complicated by existing conditions such as the discovery of concrete cancer midway through construction and structural features not in the original plans.
