Liverpool Medical Suites

Liverpool Medical Suites

Liverpool Medical Suites is a specialist practice designed for an Endocrine Surgeon and a Urological Surgeon within Southwest Private Hospital in Liverpool, New South Wales.

When architects Studio P’s design medical projects, their main aim is to create a warm and inviting space that is comfortable for the user.

The design for the project was to move far away from the traditional feel of a clinic.

The material and texture selections, combined with soft curves, helped achieve an appealing and modern medical suite in an otherwise rigid and clinical space.

The architect’s brief was to create a well-designed space that suited the needs of medical specialists, staff, and patients.

Whilst there were two separate clients on this project with individual requirements for their consulting suites, they wanted a cohesive vision to create a comfortable, practical, and aesthetic space with privacy and pleasing acoustics.

The project design encountered several challenges that included:

  • accommodating the needs of both clients into a relatively tight footprint, without it feeling cramped or uncomfortable.
  • the two consulting rooms are the only areas that have windows and look directly out onto another building, so allowing natural light into as much of the space as possible while retaining privacy was key.
  • ensuring the space met the architect’s vision of not looking and feeling clinical while suiting the practical day-to-day needs of the medical consultants.

The architects delivered the brief by creating flexible spaces that allowed for extra workspaces when required. The staff kitchenette and private office allowed for on flow of workspace if needed and the consulting rooms were individually tailored to suit the needs of the practitioner.

By adding shutters to the consulting room windows, natural light was captured whilst blocking the view both into the space and outwards to the neighbouring apartment building, thus retaining privacy for the clients.

To allow light to reach other areas, the architects introduced a reeded translucent glass highlight window above the consulting room doors to let light flow down the corridor and into the waiting areas.

The natural fibre of the ceiling tile, whilst adding texture and warmth, takes away the commercial feel of a grid ceiling and provides the acoustic qualities required for the space.

Built in joinery in the waiting area and for the patient beds allowed for more storage space below and a seamless design without the need of free-standing furniture. The walnut Porta timber lining and soft green leather used within the joinery throughout tied all the spaces together.

Through materiality, he architects were able to bring both comfort and aesthetic values to the project. Warm timbers, brass fixtures and fittings, natural green ceramics, concrete and leather and a combination of woven and timber plank vinyl flooring worked together to create a modern look whilst being durable, easy to clean, and practical for the clients’ needs.
