The offices and workshops of the Melbourne Theatre Company at Southbank in Melbourne, Australia house about 60 people working across a variety of areas including:
- administration
- finance
- creative
- technical production (including rehearsals)
- set construction
- wardrobe makers
Six Degrees Architects was retained to design a space for these uses.
The Melbourne Theatre Company wanted robust, simple, and flexible spaces.
With a theatrical edge.
And no institutional feel.
Six Degrees Architects characterized the public areas by colour, memory, and texture.
They used “granny” – carpets, plywood, and coloured glass – to create a generous yet durable environment.
Like an old friendly pub.
Outside, they introduced seating, landscaping, disabled access, and craftsman built super-scaled signage.
That treatment softened the Sturt Street edge.
And provided more useable outside areas for staff too.
Six Degrees Architects embedded ESD technology including:
- switchable air-conditioning
- openable windows
- day-lighting
- solar hot water
- rainwater collection
