Monbulk Primary School was established in 1887. The school’s presence within the Monbulk region is characterised by long-standing community connections that are multi-generational and proud of its unique context.
Monbulk is a town in Victoria, 42 km east of Melbourne’s Central Business District.
Kosloff Architecture developed a master plan for Monbulk Primary School.
The masterplan reflected the Kosloff design team’s pedagogical approach of creating discrete learning neighbourhoods, woven together by a variety of landscape spaces including kitchen gardens, competition outdoor courts, outdoor teaching and learning, and extensive nature play.
Two new buildings were delivered following the adoption of the master plan.
They included a senior teaching and learning facility complete with food technology spaces, and a new administration building that provided a new entry to the school.
The existing 1913 heritage building was also repurposed to provide junior teaching and learning spaces and a new school library.
The senior teaching and learning building references elements of the existing heritage building, both formally and through materiality.
The facility looks to create an occupiable façade where children can sit, play games, and socialize.
The administration building floats upon a galvanized skirt that navigates the undulating terrain typical of this campus.
Sculptured around a newly planted tree, the shadows from the surrounding landscape shift and change during the day as the sun moves across the sky.
