Situated in the quiet township of Hawley Beach Tasmania, this minimalist getaway holiday home was designed for a couple by Starbox Architecture.
It explores shack living in a modern way and is designed with function top-of-mind.
The home was split into two zones to deal with the slope and the rock.
It comprises two structures.
- The garage for storage of vehicles, bikes, kayaks, and outdoor gear.
- The private area that has an open plan living/dining/kitchen, a hidden European-styled laundry, and three bedrooms with an ensuite and shared bathroom.
The garage faced the driveway and was raised higher up the block for easy access and to be able to provide a car to exit in a forward manner.
The main living area focuses on the backyard for privacy and to maximise solar passive design.
The private living and bedroom zone maximised the northern-orientated facade with glass. This allowed the sun to warm up the internal polished concrete slab and use the thermal mass as mechanical free heating.
Cross ventilation was also maximised through huge sliding doors and high windows were also provided to expel any unwanted hot air and cool down the space quicker if required.
The opposing skillion rooves are clad in Colorbond custom orb fold to form the ‘book end’ type rear walls of the two structures.
And the vertical timber cladding of Pacific Teak, used for its minimal shrinkage and maintenance, resembles the shacks in the surrounding area.
The key challenges faced by the Starbox Architecture design team were to deal with the rock on the sloping internal block and provide functional spaces for easy access and explore ways to minimise mechanical heating/ cooling.
