Designed by the then University of Queensland Staff Architect James Birrell and completed in 1965, the J.D. Story Administration Building at the University of Queenland’s St Lucia campus, was a progressive building in the way concrete was used and labour deployed during the construction process.
It is named after John Douglas Story, a prominent Queensland public servant who worked for the establishment of the University.
For Queensland in 1964, it was a pioneering venture with prefabricated wall and floor elements.
The extensive, curving, glass curtain walls, though unsuitable for Queensland’s climate, also marked a technological step forward.
