In 2019, Lovell Chen led the project to restore the Old Council Chamber at Victoria’s Trades Hall.
They aimed to reinstate its spectacular mid-1880s splendour as part of the first phase of ongoing conservation and upgrade works.
The project was funded for the most part by the State Government’s Living Heritage Program.
A plan of restoration was developed following a finishes investigation by specialists from the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation (GCCMC) at the University of Melbourne.
The project combines restoration of painted detail, re-stenciling based on uncovered evidence, cleaning of the lunette paintings, reconstruction of pendant light fittings, and conservation works to the timber floor, tiers, and bespoke seating.
New heating and cooling systems were installed and the windows modified for ventilation and DDA compliance.
