This project is in the town of Berry, located 144 km south of Sydney via the Princes Highway.
In recent times Berry has become a fashionable weekend and “tree change” escape for Sydneysiders, particularly those living in the southern and eastern suburbs, who have found the surrounding green, rolling hills an ideal location for quiet holidays away from the city bustle.
The local Chamber of Commerce named it “The Town of Trees” in 1975 because, towards the end of the last century, the local settlers planted extensive stands of English oaks, elms, and beech trees.
Designed by Casey Brown Architecture and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, two tiny copper towers sit among lush green paddocks.
They were conceived to provide the essential requirements for shelter – a bed, a deck, a fireplace, and a bathroom.
The demands of living were masterfully distilled to the essentials here.
A place with everything you need.
But nothing you don’t.
The structure is made from recycled iron bark, sourced from an unused wharf float.
It has three manual winches to lift and lower the sides of the building creating an overhang to protect against the summer sun.
The building was entirely pre-fabricated within an on-site barn by master craftsman, Jeffery Broadfield and the building team from Smith and Primmer.
The building realised many dreams for the client, the architect, and the craftsmen – a collaboration that relished the process of making.
