Stokes Street Residence

Located in Port Melbourne, the Stokes Street Residence’ interiors were redesigned by Adele Bates.

Their client loves modern, clean architecture; drawn to clean angles and white exteriors.

Their property is located near the beach in Port Melbourne, an ideal place for a modern, white beach side house.

But the existing layout included multiple rooms that were small and closed in.

So the Adele Bates design team wanted fewer rooms to create more open space, envisioning a stylish, social, and relaxed environment with a sense of relaxed lush.

The site area is 300 mwith challenging dimensions-  6 meters wide and 50 meters long.

This skinny footprint presented a unique challenge – to create a layering of luxurious interior elements while maintaining visual clarity and a sense of spaciousness.

It was tricky fitting everything in and making all of the space count.

The Adele Bates design started with re-locating the stairs from a closed in staircase to an open staircase along the wall in the direction of the house.

The stair and joinery were designed with a strong linear direction to work with the plan of the home.

The new plan created an open plan kitchen and family room at the back of the house which opens onto the backyard.

It also included a front formal lounge room, three large bedrooms, a study, a full size laundry, three bathrooms and plenty of storage.

Bespoke and unique detailing added scale and finesse to the interior spaces, while marble and polished plaster offset the dark tones to create a sense of balance.

Within the bathrooms, tactile marble and tiles complement the elegantly simple joinery forms.

And custom-made fittings in a brushed rose gold finish provide an unexpected accent to a lush palette of textures.

The design delivered a flow through house with a balance of finishes and textures and consistency of detail and scale.

Home to a young family of four, the interior design combines dark textural timber floors and joinery with statement touches of colour to reflect the client’s personality.

It’s a family-friendly and livable home, encompassing elegantly layered spaces over two light-filled levels.
