Twenty years ago, this award-winning beach house was designed by Design King Company in association with Peter Ireland Architect.
Three owners later, Design King was commissioned by the current owners to create a contemporary redesign, both inside and out.
Upon reflection, the Design King team assessed that the original design principles of the building were still relevant and strong.
For instance, the eastern-facing living area takes full advantage of the stunning ocean views whilst protected courtyards provide a much-needed relief from the strong ocean winds.
These courtyards also allow for the deep penetration of sunlight into the main living area and the bedrooms.
This building was originally designed with the intent to float above the sand dunes, suspended on an elegant cantilevered and suspended structure.
Although largely invisible, this enables the building to be secured in place in what is a dynamic and unstable environment.
In a recent storm, events this structure proved immensely successful for this home whilst others were less fortunate.
The new alterations by the Design King team focused on creating a building that reflects its natural surroundings.
Since the original design, the building was clad in Australian hardwood which has greyed beautifully.
The building now sits discreetly on the dunes.
All windows and doors have been replaced to create much larger openings that blend the inside and the outside environment.
The thermal and acoustic insulation has also been significantly improved as has the interior design component of the house.
Bedrooms and bathrooms are in the rear wing with garages and service spaces underneath.
An upper study creates a unique viewing point to observe the length of Wamberal Beach.
The interior design of this project in Wamberal has become a defining feature of the house that is both sophisticated and relaxed.
The key interior feature of this home is the dramatic timber-lined ceiling that undulates throughout the building, echoing the form of the sandy dunes and rolling waves.
Soaring above the living area that faces the ocean, it helps amplify the magnificent views whilst becoming lower towards the sleeping quarters of the home, creating a heightened sense of intimacy and privacy.
This timber roof provides a sense of warmth and protection from the stunning, albeit sometimes harsh coastal environment.
The interior finishes are similarly defined by their timber warmth that unites the contrast of black and white walls and the restrained use of surprising textures.
The east-facing living areas are designed to be open and light and embrace the beach views.
White walls amplify the light-filled, airy quality of these spaces, while the curtains minimize glare from the ocean and create a sense of dynamism, as they move gently in the wind.
The kitchen has been finished in darker timber tones that mimic the surrounding trees, and in doing, help anchor the space as the core of the home.
Characterized by its earthy finishes, the kitchen benchtop is solid polished concrete.
The handmade Morrocan tiles on the kitchen splashback beautiful offset these finishes, adding a textural intrigue and decoration to the space.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are similarly defined by their natural tones, impactful black and white walls, and subtle finishes, creating a sense of cohesion to the inside of the home.
Ultimately, the Wamberal Beach House interior design communicates a timeless stylishness that accommodates the taste and lifestyle of the property owners.
